Balakirev wrote his Oriental Fantasy Islamei쟧n just one month September 1869. Overwhelming experiences of fine scenery and the magic of exotic music were powerful stimuli for the creation of the work. He travelled to Caucasus and was inspired by a tune he heard there, called Islamey (sic.). The resulting piece for solo piano is one of the most challenging and virtuosic works in the repertoire.ry
