Alexander Luigini (1850-1906) was an Italian violinist, conductor and composer who was born in France and spent most of his life there. Ballet Egyptien (1875) is his best known work, gaining great popularity in the early 20th century as a concert suite. It originally gained prominence when it was included in the second act of Verdi’s opera Aida for a performance in Lyon in 1886. He is sometimes known as “the other Italian composer who tried to compose Egyptian music!” This version for string orchestra is arranged by Percy Hall.
