Here is the iconic 1960s hit by Martha & the Vandellas on overdrive! A perfect show choir theme, this arrangement opens with a vocal build punctuated by horn punches and handclaps before exploding into the instantly recognized verse. This set of pieces by Alice Parker to poetry by Nancy Wood was commissioned by the American Composers Forum for the ChoralQuest program allowing middle school choirs to discover music of varying moods and rhythms. The first in the set, “What I Am I Must Become” creates a thoughtful quiet mood through four riddle-like statements. “Song Woman” celebrates the voices and lives of women through cheerful, lighter motion and the final song “When Trouble Comes to Me” gives voice to the young men, gathering up their energy and strength and offering a positive outlet for their emotion.

Based on the traditional African American spiritual, this setting depicts the story of Noah and the flood. After the baritone soloist introduces the chorus of the spiritual, the SSATB choir responds with a harmonized version. The audience gets the opportunity to participate in this gospel-style arrangement by making percussive rain sounds during the 2-measure breaks of the closing section. From Disney Channel artist Zendaya, this “girl-power” anthem encourages girls to look within to find their inner strength. The New Orleans style street beat energizes the track and this setting will be a super SSA showcase!
